Why the opening sequence is important

Hitchcock wound not let people watch the film if they did not see the opening sequence as he said that you need to watch the opening sequence to enjoy the film. However this statement of his was only taken seriously when he started to hire police to be present at cinemas in order to shop people watching the film is they are late and have missed the opening sequence. This added a publicity of its own to the film as it is the only film to have this publicity.
